Word for the week: Frog

Because...

It's Genus Frog's birthday. He's leaps and bounds ahead of your average amphibian. Yup, he's pretty much croaking his way to immortality. Ummhmm, sometimes he ponders his future a bit too much, but I reckon we'll be able to rib it out of him in no time.

Michele - Songs To The Magic Frog (from Saturn Rings) [BUY]
Michele O'Malley's luminous psych pop shoulda never fallen prey to 'em 1960s corporate shennaniganers. You're damn right there's such a word.

Sergio Mendes featuring Q-Tip and will.i.am - The Frog (from Timeless) [BUY]
Dear indierati, if you can, do give Mr My Humps a chance; even Nickelback had one decent song.

Keane - The Frog Prince (from Under The Iron Sea) [BUY]
The Worst Thing To Ever Happen To Chris Martin would like us to know that they have no intention of naming their kids Papaya.

Tom Smith - A Boy And His Frog (from Who Let Him In Here?)
If Daniel Johnston ever scored The Muppet Show, you have to imagine it sounding close to something from the loins from this much-revered filker (that's folk with a sci-fi theme, in case you're wondering).

Kermit The Frog - The Rainbow Connection
Q: What did one gay frog say to the other? A: Rub-it Rub-it.

Let's get lyrical, lyrical: The Films - Belt Loops

Well she said jealousy is something that distracts you
I said it's hard to focus with your fingers in his belt loops
Then there was that dream about you naked in the bathroom
Telephone just rang, I heard you say I'll call you back soon

He's been waiting in the alley for an hour
She's been powdering her nose in the shower
I've been trying to figure out where it went sour
But I think the ringing in my ears is getting louder

Hold out your hand, and take it easy
I already know what's been going on
I knew it all along
So just, take it, easy
You're acting surprised and I just roll my eyes
It's gonna be alright
Alright

She's like a devil in a dark shade of lipstick
An unassuming sort of x-rated misfit
Her bottle's shook up all you gotta do is twist it
Before you get a chance you'll already have missed it
He's got his arm around her looking like an actress
A chain to driven he'd been posing like a baptist
Subtle proposition, will you fit him in your track list
Maybe you'll just get right down to wearing out the mattress

Take what you can
And, take it easy
I already know what's been going on
I knew it all along
So just, take it, easy
You're acting surprised and I just roll my eyes
It's gonna be alright
Alright

Take it easy
I already know what's been going on
I knew it all along
So just, take it easy
You're acting surprised and I just roll my eyes
It's gonna be alright
Alright

Take it easy
I already know what's been going on
I knew it all along
So just, take it easy
You're acting surprised and I just roll my eyes
It's gonna be alright

Just so we're straight and you don't get the wrong impression
Don't need a silly little overdue confession
Just remember when you're over at his house undressing
He's just another sucker who's about to learn a lesson

Oh is this the new lyrical revolution? Just rhyme two things that have absolutely nothing to do with one another? Like trying to get Meryl Streep down for a barbecue with the guys from Napalm Death. Ah I see, that's not too hard, wait let me give it a go.

I have been eating lotsa KFC chicken
As such that now I look like bloody Lars Ricken

Yeah I know, I am bloody brilliant. Coming up with that line took me just eight days, think of what I can accomplish in 20-years. I think my best years are very much ahead of me.

Arty Album Art: Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors

Art design and layout: Zack Nipper, Robb Nansel
Wallpaper photographs: Jamie Williams, Kimberly Hager

According to the liner notes, Conor Oberst recorded Fevers and Mirrors "for the most part in the final month of the twentieth century in Lincoln, NE". That, in itself, should give us a clue as to the theme of the third album from Mr The Rest Of My Anatomy Ain't Very Bright.

So what's the theme, you ask? Ummm... well, let's investigate. The cover as got this mirror-like frame going, plus a wallpaper motif. Ummm...

Nope, I'm stumped. What does a mirror and wallpaper have to do with a singer-songwriter who writes lyrics such as "So don't leave me here with only mirrors watching me"? I don't see the correlation one bit. Sheesh.

Let's open it up and see if we can infer something more, shall we?

Alright, so the CD also has the reflection thingy plus more curly wurlies. Okay, okay, I got it. He's trying to tell us to floss!

No?

Fine. Digging deeper...

Aha! So that mirror thingy is just a piece of floppy plastic. Conor is promoting shiny origami!

Hey, stop slapping your head. You'll hurt yourself.

This is annoying. What else can it be? I've scoured all over the artwork, put it under UV light and even sent it to 19 universities for six months of rigorous testing. They've all sent back their results, with some thick, wire-bound dissertations that all seem to use the words "self", "reflection", "depression", "dimwit" and "if you don't get it, we'll chop your fingers" in their titles. But all that ain't helping me one bit. I feel like throwing in the towe...

Wait. I see something.

There you are! Cutie pie. I totally get it now! Your album is about your dabbles with interior decorating when you were 13!

Parsons, here I come.

In the papers today...

Apple unveiled the new iPhone yesterday. In front of 5,000 developers and journalists, CEO Steve Jobs declared that the most desired phone on the planet now has 3G capabilities, optional white casing, and is US$400 cheaper. It will be made available worldwide on 11th July. In other industry news, Nokia announced it was changing its core business to vacuum cleaners.
This story reminds me of: Digable Planets - Three Slim's Dynamite (from Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles) [BUY]

Filmmakers Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood have engaged in a war of words. Lee started the bitching by saying that Eastwood's Flag of the Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima ignored the role that black soldiers played in those military campaigns. Eastwood replied by asking Lee to "shut his face". Lee countered by reminding Eastwood that they were not "on a plantation". Finally, Marlon Brando stepped in to prove his penis was the biggest. Since then, both Lee and Eastwood have gone missing.

Porsche celerated its 60th birthday this weekend by unveiling four new versions of its famed 911 Carrera. The new models, which include two coupes and two convertibles, will have a 385hp direct fuel-injection engine, a top speed of 188mph and an optional double-clutch gearbox that shifts between the seven gears up to 60 percent faster than normal. I'm sure all that means something to someone. I'm not that someone.

B-Side of the Week - Carnaby Street

The Jam
Carnaby Street (from the All Around The World single)
(Polydor)

Paul Weller must have a thing for naming music after addresses. He had that solo album called Stanley Road and now I've dug up this b-side from The Jam's heyday called Carnaby Street.

But as way back as the early 1930s, I had already released a 7" blues record called Jalan Gajah Mati. Well before the war broke out, I already had the gold hit Jalan SS2/15F playing out of every radio in Malaysia. And the post-war boom saw successive releases of my double-disc concept album Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (disc one was Utara, disc two was Selatan) and the regional top 10 single Unit 3A-3A.

So apart from the abundantly obvious double truths that Malaysians can do whatever the Brits can and that I've had a brilliant career, this also puts to rest any further doubt that panda bears are in fact insects. I saw one with six legs the other day. Damn thing flies like a jet I tell you.

The Jam - Carnaby Street

Euro 2008: Dutcho Destructo

There are some things in life, you just can't imagine happening.

The 3-0 mauling the Dutch gave the Italians last night at Euro 2008 ranks second in a list of things I couldn't have imagined happening. I would've sooner imagined Dutch coach Marco Van Basten doing a Swan Lake routine, complete with twirls with a Timmy Thomas track blaring in the background than this. Or Italy coach Roberto Donadoni breaking out the karaoke machines for some Carpenters loving at half time. Or me bedding six catwalk models with Starflyer 59 serenading us in the background. Oh, wait, already done that.

Ah, what's the first you say? This. So much so that I just leaped off the roof of a 39-floor building just to prove that it isn't real. Yep, I'm still talking. Thank God, it wasn't real. Hey, is that blood I see. Oh, why is everything turning dark? I wonder what is ... (silence).

Fad of the Land: The Green Man Festival Poll

England's Green Man Festival has invited all bands to join a comp that entitles the winning band to be the opening act of the fest, which will take place in mid-August and features Super Furry Animals, Spiritualized, Iron and Wine and The National, among others. The contest's mechanics are truly 2.0: bands get votes, the most voted band gets the slot and six free tickets, and one voter wins two tix.

Forward-thinking, aye? Erm, yeah, 'cept that it's not exactly the sunset-ushering slot de grace that they're offering here. Opening a festival like this is a bit like being a serving of beetroot salad that begins a 300 course buffet where Wagyu beef, Osetra caviar and Podolico cheese populate the spread. So how would that beetroot salad feel, you ask? A bit beet, I reckon.

The Decemberists - I Was Meant For The Stage (from Her Majesty) [BUY]

Look what I found in the bargain bin (but didn't buy)

Redd Kross
Show World
(Universal)

Price: RM4.00

Yep I did not buy this even if it was a heck of a good deal. Why? Because I already own it.

It's a little like Megan Fox. I saw her at a lawn sale the other day. Was wondering if I should purchase her, since I already own her. Then decided I should because, you can't have too many Megan Foxes right? So I picked her up, went up to the counter, threw some cash on the counter and headed on my way. It's been two days now ... hey wait hold on, I thought I heard my name on the TV.

(5 mins later). Yeesh, apparently some guy also named The Geek is being wanted for kidnapping Megan Fox. Would ya believe that? People should just pay for things and not shoplift. My mama always told me that. And why would I need to steal a dang Megan Fox anyways seeing as I already own one. And sure some people have been calling me a lunatic for taking a plastic doll out on a date but they don't know the half of it. Namely that half that says I got her on the cheap at Toys R Us. And anything that is cheap just automatically rocks. Yeehaw.

Frankenfest @ Singfest: Ultimate Act Added to Lineup

My my, looks like you definitely can't underestimate things these days.

Just as I thought that having Josh Groban and his chicken breast choir would be a step in the Franken direction, the organizers of Singfest have gone one better - they've gotten Rick Astley instead!

Behold! The new face of Singfest.

Word is, he still looks like that these days.

Oh yeah, New Found Glory, lostprophets, Dearest, Stacie Orrico, Jason Mraz and Crowned King have been added to the lineup as well. But who the heck cares when Rick's 'never gonna give you up'.

Yeah baby. Love the hair, and the fire-repellent jacket.

Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up (from Whenever You Need Somebody) [BUY]

Euro 2008: The All-Star Stinky Pirates XI

Ahh the stench of football is in the air again, particularly the stench of European footballers, which I have been told smells a lot like Oprah's armpits mixed with a spoon of essence of baboon. Anyways, Euro 2008 is upon us and seeing as football is the other thing, besides checking out chicks at the mall and curing cancer, that us Pirates take a lot of pride in, we thought it would be nice for us to share with you our very own Stinky XI.

1. Jens Lehmann - Germany (GK)

Is it just me or has nobody noticed how much Jens Lekman looks like David Hasselhoff? Which is cool if you're German because if there's one person you want keeping your goal, it's Michael Knight.
Jens Lekman - A Man Walks Into a Bar (from Oh You're So Silent Jens) [BUY]

2. Mario Melchiot - Netherlands (D)
My dad used to say that Mario Melchiot looks and plays like a predator. I used to laugh at my dad for saying that but I am starting to think that is true. Why else would he make the damn squad anyways, if not that. And by predator I don't mean a lion, but the alien that skins people alive.
Mario - How Do I Breathe (from Go) [BUY]

3. Joan Capdevila - Spain (D)
I am a fairly open minded individual, but where I come from (which is somewhere fairly unpronounceable with a lot of swords and chicks in bearskin bikinis) it ain't a guy's name unless it starts with a B and ends with an E, which means we only accept the name Bruce. So if you're not a Bruce, you're automatically a ninny. Unless you have my name, which is Badsarse. That is also okay.
Joan of Arc - Infinite Blessed (from So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness) [BUY]

4. Johnny Heitinga - Netherlands (D)
The Dutch are sporting a woeful-looking defence for the tournament and at the heart of it, a Johnny. Seriously, all he needs now is a leather jacket, some shades and a hot blond draped over his arms. Ahh here comes the blond, with the leather jacket and shades now. Dang, that's a hot one. (After a good hearty 8-minutes of whistling) Sorry, where were we again?
Johnny Boy - War on Want (from Johnny Boy) [BUY]

5. Christian Panucci (D)
Holy cow it's Christian Panucci. Isn't he like 60-years old by now? So they do give older people a chance at these things. No wonder grandpa was off to training the other day with his walker. He never did return though. I wonder what happened to him.
Christians and Lions - Gimme Diction (from More Songs for Daydreamers and the Very Awake)

6. Miguel Luis Pinto Veloso - Portugal (M)
And sure, most people would call him Miguel Veloso, but we've chosen to highlight his second middle name Pinto. Why? Because if there was a band called Veloso, we would have to shoot the singer in the head, Miguel sounds like the name of a Spanish porn star and Luis is the name of my second-and-a-half uncle who likes dating taller women.
Pinto - This Picture Needs a Frame (from Hook Me Up) [BUY]

7. Ruben de la Red - Spain (M)
Awww ... look at the cute ex-Madrid starlet blushing. He's all red cause he has to go back to Madrid next season to kiss Arjen Robben's left butt cheek. It's either that or Ivan Campo's armpits and spend a summer on loan to Derby County as their water boy. Yeps, pucker up baby.
Vendetta Red - Joyless Euphoria (from Sisters of the Red Death) [BUY]

8. Sebastian Larsson - Sweden (M)
Sebastian deserves a damn starting place, only because his last name is Larsson. And in my book, every damn Swede that is named Larsson is automatically a good footballer, just like how every Gianluigi is supposed to have a moustache and every Optimus is supposed to be a robot.
Belle and Sebastian - Mayfly (from If You're Feeling Sinister) [BUY]

9. Luca Toni - Italy (F)
Luca Toni has apparently been scoring a lot of chicks. He scored 39 chicks this year, making him the top scorer in Germany. What? Goals you say? So that's what they call em these days eh?
Tony! Toni! Tone! - Whatever You Want (from The Revival) [BUY]

10. Mario Gomez - Germany (F)
There's something bloody wrong about the world when you have a Gomez playing for Germany. Why? Cause all Germans should be a Matthias or Adolf or Helga (if you're a hot blond synchronized swimmer).
Gomez - Coltrane (from Detroit Swing ’66/Ping One Down) [BUY]

11. Thierry Henry - France (F)
What's there about Henry that's not already been said? Used to date a few hot chicks. Was married to a hot chick. Yeah, that's all.
Joe Henry - Stop (from Scar) [BUY]

Euro 2008: Pirates' Predictions

So Euro 2008 begins this weekend. We've all pledged our allegiances, blocked our schedules and cut deals with our employers to lick their bonnets as recompense for the hours of productivity certain to be lost. Why would we do such things? We'll tell you when our tongues grow turnips.

Anyways, I'm kicking things off with a list of flawless, meticulously researched predictions. Remember me in three weeks.

Just there for the photo ops: Austria, Switzerland
Sometimes host nations surpass expectations. Other times, like when all they have to rely on are Philippe Senderos and some dude named Macho, you gotta at least provide nice postcards.
The Clash - Safe European Home (from Give 'Em Enough Rope) [BUY]

Wishes that the "Group of Death" was a Swiss slang for "candy floss": Romania
In Euro 2000, Romania came second in a group that had Portugal, England and Germany, and made it to the quarter finals. Also in Euro 2000, Germany had a player named Hans-Jörg Butt. Nuh-uh.
Massive Attack - Euro Zero Zero (from Descent to Heaven)

Wonders why 2004 seems so long ago: Greece
Four years ago, I had six pack abs, owned an island and worked 12 minutes a month. Yeah, I don't remember that time either.
Foo Fighters - Sister Europe (from All My Life single) [BUY]

Will thank their country's football federation for the holiday: Poland, Turkey, Sweden
Hey, dudes? I highly recommend the day trip to Salzsburg. It's yonks better than getting creamed by a Ronaldo hattrick.
R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe (from Murmur) [BUY]

Hooray, another tournament without 'em drunk poms: Croatia
Hey, I'm grateful for the fish & chips and all. Seriously. Ooo, and Cheryl Tweedy.
The Velvet Underground - European Son (from The Velvet Underground & Nico) [BUY]

Does it pretty, but their ladies will score more: Netherlands, Czech Republic
I like pretty football too. Mine has pink and yellow patches, and a avocado green ribbon on the top. Its following me to the prom.
Destroyer - European Oils (from Destroyer's Rubies) [BUY]

Tops group, then sucks more balls than it kicks: France, Spain
You know how monkeys always succeed in stealing your baked beans? In the quarters, the baked beans buy shotguns.
Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express (from Minimum-Maximum) [BUY]

So close they get silver poisoning: Russia, Germany
In this year's tourney, semi-finalists get 3 million euros. Expect the bulk of that to go to caskets of vodka and Kölsch.
The Winter Olympics - Feeling European (single)

Finalists: Portugal, Italy
So, it's the overgelled hairs versus the nipple-hugging tees. A bona fide granny's playground.
Europe - The Final Countdown (from The Final Countdown) [BUY]

Champs: Portugal
Forget the Golden Generation; this lot's gonna go platinum, baby.
Glasvegas - Flowers and Football Tops (acoustic) (from Home Tapes demos)

Word for the Week: Fuel

Because...

Fuel in my part of the world went up 78 cents. So obviously, I'll be complaining like the rest of the dungus, right? You dungu. Neither me nor the 18 bottlenose dolphins pulling my barge give two fins about petrol. But if they start messing with tuna prices, then oh boy, things gonna get real nasty...

M Ward - Fuel For Fire (from Transistor Radio)
Find me a bedroom beau that snuggles better. If you do find her, tell her to give back my teddy Bushy Cush.

Fuel - Hemorrhage (In My Hands) (from Something Like Human)
One of these days, when your closet Scott Stapp gets his annual stroll round the suburb, you'll thank me for this. You watch.

Anberlin - Readyfuels (from Blueprints for the Blackmarket)
An embattled Stephen Christian settles on abstinence, despite his honey's killer dress. She probably made him watch Sex In The City.

Metallica - Fuel (from Reload)
Ain't no highway long enough to burn up the fumes bursting outta this axelchomper.

This Week's Track 9 - The Boy With The Arab Strap

In connection with my new graveyard job at the Malaysian censorship board, I am here to set a song title straight. Now Belle & Sebastian have this popular number called The Boy With The Arab Strap. What da heck is a boy doing with an Arab strap? I officially deem that title to be either offensive to boys, offensive to Arabs or contextually ignorant. Therefore, all prints of Belle & Sebastian albums in Malaysia shall be edited to reflect a new title for this song, which I shall officially deem as "grammatically incomplete" and which I too shall complete.

Here are my options:

1. The Boy with the Arab Strapped on his Back
2. The Boy with the Arab Strapped on his Horse
3. The Boy with the Arab Strapped on Another Arab
4. The Boy with the Arab Strapped on An Arab Boy
5. The Boy with the Arab Strapped on A Boy's Arab

I'm thinking of going with number 5. This way, we can... what? They don't stock Belle & Sebastian in Malaysian cd stores anyway? What a bloody waste of time.

Let's get lyrical, lyrical: The Decemberists - Leslie Anne Levine

My name is Leslie Anne Levine
My mother birthed me down a dry revine
My mother birthed me far too soon
Born at nine and dead at noon

Fifteen years gone now
I still wander this parapet
And shake my rattle bone
Fifteen years gone now
I still cling to the petticoats
Of the girl who died with me

On the roofs above the streets
The only love I've known's a chimney sweep
Lost and lodged inside a flue
Back in 1842

Fifteen years gone now
I stil wail from these catacombs
And curse my mother's name
Fifteen years gone now
Still a wastrel mesallied
Has brought this fate on me

My name is Leslie Anne Levine
I've got no one left to mourn for me
My body lies inside its grave
In a ditch not far away

Fifteen years gone now
I still wander this parapet
And shake my rattle bone
Fifteen years gone now
I still cling to the petticoats
Of the girl who died with me

This is by far the most depressing song I've ever heard in my life. And it's not even because this Leslie Anne Levine lived such a tragic life. Like I care about someone who lived in 1842. Nopes, it's not cause of that. You want to know why? Because I have sat down here for 20-mins now trying to figure out what a parapet is and I still have no clue. My best calculated guess is that it's a rat with tiger claws and duck feet. Sigh, it's depressing when someone named Colin is smarter than you.
