Rarity on the Rarity: Copeland - Black Hole Sun

Copeland
Black Hole Sun
(Fearless)

Rare factor: Sugary sweet Floridan band cover gloomy Seattle grunge classic for a tacky punk compilation? The first time in the series that the original band is actually more punk than the band covering it.

Allowing Copeland to cover Soundgarden is like eating fried chicken with chocolate sauce. Not that it does not work, but well, it's just a little strange. Me? I prefer my chicken with strawberry sauce myself topped with some cherrys and a scoop of 'durian' ice cream. Now that my friend, is a combo that's not strange. Have I told you about my deep fried monkey recipe? Oh man, the syrup on that one.

Rarity on the Rarity: Scenic World (Second Version)

Beirut
Scenic World (Second Version)
(Ba Da Bing!)
Rare factor: Little-known follow up to their smashing debut, featuring an alternate version to this album track that sounds strangely, Irish? It sounds better yes, that's what we wanted to say.

There's only two ways you can redo a song, you can either do it the same way it was done before, or you can do it the Irish way, which basically involves you dressing up in green, growing orange facial hair, trying to grab the waitresses bottoms with your left hand while swigging a mug of lager with your right and then every five seconds you say 'Aye' and sail off on a pirate ship? What do you mean pirates aren't Irish? Aren't they the same thing?

Rarity on the Rarity: Let Down

Pedro the Lion
Let Down
(Jadetree)
Rare factor: Lazy Radiohead cover on a rare limited edition tour EP? Yeah, that's what we thought.

Dave takes a rare stab at Thom Yorke's yodel on this cover that's parked at the end of a rare 'live in the studio' album. And I know what you must be thinking, why is his name Dave and not Pedro. My assumption is that Pedro is his pet lion, the one he rides around with. Which would instantly make him about 40% more He-Man than the average man. Now to just work on his hair, any hair. And maybe some of the gut. And the prophet-like facial hair. Holy cow, he's no He-Man.

Rarity on the Rarity: Popscene

Blur
Popscene
EMI/Food
Rare factor: Non-album low charting single that went out of print and almost wrecked the band but eventually became a cult classic.

Ow my head. It's not fun to wake up and discover that ninjas came into your room last night and chopped up every part of you except for your right arm. So now, while the paramedics and my neighbourhood seamstress conspire to stitch me back together, I exist purely as the right arm of Pirate Genusfrog. Which is still more fabulous than you.

Oh you never been just one part of your body before? What a life you must've lived. You really should get out more. Like this one time, I was out hunting lions with The Geek. And the lions ate him up till all he was left with was his arse. And so there we were, one full awesome man and an arse, going around with guns, shooting at lions. Man that was fun. If only I had become a right arm that afternoon. It would have looked poetic.

Rarity on the Rarity: Whitey

Glasvegas
Whitey
(WaKS)
Rare factor: Home demo

Here's an acoustic home demo from Mr Allan. Take it. No, seriously, take it. What do you mean you already have the album? Can't you see this thing is called Rarity on the Rarity? Yeah. So? Well that's what it means, you dumbass. It's a rarity. It's not on the album. What? The self-titled album, you doof. Yeah. So you want it. Just click on... no. It's not on the singles. It's not a b-side. Yes. Yes. I am Pirate Genusfrog. No, this is not my b-side column. This is... look, do you want this or not? Ok fine, beat it.

I tell you, some people are just impossible. Like this other time, I was trying to feed a 1kg deep-fried pork trotter to my Slovakian date. Damn girl kept going on about never having seen the beach and wanting to do some rubbish with a blanket. I told her the only use for a blanket when you have a 1kg deep-fried pork trotter in front of your face is to keep the hog warm. Cos there's nothing more tear-jerking than an uneaten shivering piece of pig.

Rarity on the Rarity: Not For The Season

Wilco
Not For The Season
(Nonesuch)
Rare factor: A smuggled out Yankee Hotel Foxtrot demo

Hector goes to the library and finishes reading a book in 30 minutes. The book is 287 pages long. If Billy finished the first 144 pages of the book in the first 12 minutes, how long did it take for the invisible five-fanged rabbit to hop from the General Philosophy shelves to the Parenting & Maternity section?

Answer: 12 seconds

Marlena takes 55 minutes to go to the bank, and thereon spends another 55 minutes standing in the queue. If she spends another 55 minutes at the counter, and this happens on the first Monday of every month, calculate the time it takes before her husband starts having an affair.

Answer: 3 years 1 month

If an elk weighs 300kg before hunting season and 330kg after hunting season, calculate the ratio of its mean calorie intake per day, in a 90-day hunting season, against its daily burning of calories, and using such ratio, supply the song that said elk would listen to on its ipod while jogging.

Answer: Wilco - Not For The Season

Rarity on the rarity - Lord, Don't Slow Me Down

Oasis
Lord, Don't Slow Me Down
(Big Brother)

Rare factor: Online-only single.

Johnson begot Waters, Waters begot Berry, Berry begot Lennon, and Lennon begot Gallagher.

Now Gallagher was forty years when his disciples built an altar for his greatness. Beginning in his youth with Lightning Speed and Immortality, he proceedeth to craft the Great Brick Division and did so reach the peak of his strength with the enviable Eternally Reconciled Forward Glance.

His disciples asketh him, "O Master, what didst happen then?". And their master replied, "Assuredly, I sayeth to thee. I was there then".

Now the invading hordes were upon his kingdom, and the mighty army of Yorke hath conquered much new pasture. And Gallagher thought, "I may be hard of youth now, but surely the Lord hath much promise in this new land. And I shall seeketh it with an online-only single."

And so Gallagher lifted his voice to the Lord, the God of his fathers, and saith "Lord, don't slow me down".

Rarity on the rarity: I Like A Boy In Uniform (School Uniform)

B-side of the week takes a break this... err... week... Instead, here's a rarity on the rarity, a new feature that shows up unannounced and... not... often.

The Pipettes
I Like A Boy In Uniform (School Uniform)
Unpopular Records

Rare factor: Standalone 2005 single with only 500 copies ever printed.

On every plane, there is one air stewardess whom you want to lean over you to serve orange juice to the repeatedly thirsty bloke sitting by the window.

In every hospital, there is one nurse whom you want to take your blood pressure, because it feels so good when she squeezes that rubber thing and your arm tightens up.

In every chateau, there is one french maid whom you want to dust the lazy chair that you're on, especially if the lazy chair is the kind with the propelling hidden foot-rest that can trip someone into falling onto the chair.

At every camp-site, there is one girl guide whom you'll let tie all the knots, because there's nothing nicer sometimes than letting a girl pull all the strings.

At every netball game, there is one player whom you hope will score all the goals, because eventhough she has to lift one leg in suchaway that reminds you of male canines leaking, it's still a lot more entertaining than lawn bowling.

Because it's all about the uniform.

At every classroom, there is one girl who looks better wearing school uniform than wearing anything or nothing else.
